How Much Do You Know About The ULEZ Expansion?

The ULEZ in London is nothing new and has been around for quite some time now. However, not many motorists are aware of the areas it will be extending into from Monday the 25th of October.

So, to make sure our readers are up-to-date with it all, we thought we’d collect a few of the most frequently asked questions.

What is the ULEZ?

ULEZ stands for ‘Ultra Low Emission Zone’. Any motorists who drive within the ULEZ will have to pay a daily £12.50 charge, although there are some exceptions. For example, if you drive a newer petrol car, rather than a Diesel. Or if you live within the area.

Does the ULEZ affect me?

You may be thinking this charge won’t affect you in any way. However, if you’re planning on taking a trip by car into Greater London, then this is definitely something that you need to consider.

It’s best to use the ULEZ vehicle checker if you’re not sure if you need to pay the charge.

You should also check that you don’t need to pay a Congestion Charge or a LEZ charge. It all depends on the whereabouts in London you are driving to.

Why does the ULEZ exist?

Many people are mistaken in thinking this charge is down to the current Labour Mayor: Sadiq Khan. However, it is actually our Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, who we can thank for this. Sadiq Khan has only sped up the process for it to kick into gear.

It’s a charge that was introduced to improve the air quality of London. This is a good idea, especially when you consider the amount of air pollution and how it has been affecting the residents of London. However, the scheme has faced some backlash.

Which areas will be affected by the extension?

There is a big change! The original area was quite small, and the new areas extend quite far into Greater London, rather than focusing solely on the centre.

Take a look at the Transport for London website to see which areas are now included.

We hope that might answer some of your questions, although the TFL website will definitely be the best way to bring yourself up to date.
