Have you checked your car insurance policy lately?

No, seriously, have you? Because this is important.

Don’t worry. We’re not about to bore you with yet more thoughts and details about the stresses of being in a lockdown, because unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’re very much living the reality of being in one. However, recent news this week suggests your car insurance policy could become void if your details aren’t up to date. Told you this was important.

To put it simply, this is even more significant for those of you that may have moved house or changed properties recently, during a lockdown. The information you provide to the car insurance company when you sign up for a policy needs to remain as up-to-date as possible. Otherwise, you could be jeopardizing the validity of your policy, especially if you need to make a claim.

For example, if you’ve recently started a new job, your circumstances around driving may have changed. You may now have to use your motor to drive to various sites relating to your employment, so you’re going to need to increase your estimated annual mileage. You should also ensure you’ve stated you’re using your car for commuting to work, as well as listing social, domestic and pleasure purposes.

Invalidation could especially occur if you’ve moved to a new area and haven’t updated this on your car insurance policy. You should take into consideration that car insurance providers may offer you a price and charge you a premium based on the crime rates in your area, as well as your postcode. Unfortunately, if you live in a place with higher crime rates, it’s fair to expect your premium to increase.

It’s a similar case for where your vehicle is kept. You may be familiar with the question that’s asked when you’re filling out your details to receive a quote on your car insurance policy. Your premium costs will decrease or soar based on whether your motor is kept on the street, on your drive or in a garage. Again, the price will also alter based on your area’s crime rates and your postcode. The total of accidents that have taken place in your area is also taken into consideration.

So, is your policy up to date? We’d suggest reading it over and checking your details are all correct. And hey, if you find your premium has gone through the roof as a result of this? Well, you know where you can find cheap car insurance.
