New research suggests that up to a third of British drivers could save money on their car insurance policies by installing a dash cam on their vehicle.
While we are seeing more and more of these little black boxes appear on dashboards and windscreens up and down the country, these little things may mean an outlay of cash (and some are quite expensive, state of the art jobs), but they can add up to savings on your annual insurance policy. In fact, it’s estimated that around 3,000 people now have them in their vehicles in the UK.
The result has been over 5,000 cases of police action being taken as a result of dashcam footage in the last 20 months – numbers that nobody really can argue with!
The drivers who already use dashcams were questioned and over two thirds of the 2,000 who were interviewed has said that they have used dashcam footage as part of their insurance claim and a third said that the footage helped to conclusively demonstrate that the incident in question was not their fault.
Not only that, but some insurers offer discounts of up to 20% for people who have and use dashcams in their vehicles (no good having it and not using it – you’d be surprised – some do). So, for what could be an investment of around £100 for a perfectly decent cam could save you wad in the years to come.
It also appears that people who use dashcams are strong advocates for them – up to 54% of UK drivers think they should become a legal requirement. So you never know – it may just be a matter of time before we are all headed that way.
The moral of the story? If you have one – make sure your insurer knows (and that you are using it), as it could save you money on your car insurance. And if you are thinking of buying one – it’s probably not a bad thing to spend your money on – it could end up saving you more than you spend.
