Maybe you fancied a few baubles this year to replace those furry dice? Tinsel on your dashboard? Reindeer antlers on your roof?
Forget it. Because, the bah-humbug reality is that it could invalidate your car insurance.
Yes, you heard, invalidate it.
Well, it’s because some insurers believe that adding a snow sticker or two amounts to a (wait for it)… vehicle modification.
You heard us correctly. A vehicle modification.
The bonkers theory behind it is the belief that insurance companies have is that adding a bit of festive cheer, potentially makes your car stand out, and as such, makes it a more attractive prospect for car thieves.
Ho, ho, no.
And, the only way around it, if you are fixed on having those snazzy antlers on your car, is to speak directly to your insurance company to see if they will allow them, which will inevitably lead them to reviewing your policy. Not only that, but any other on-car decorations may also attract the attention of the police.
So, you can forget about:
- Roof-mounted tree
- Rudolf red nose
- Fairy lights
- Santa hats
- Festive wreaths
- Anything remotely fun that’s on the outside of your car.
On one hand, we understand that having flashing fairy lights could be distracting to other road users, and if something isn’t securely attached, it could cause an accident, but when it’s taken to the point where a bit of tinsel on your dashboard is a punishable offence, surely the world has gone a little crazy?
So, the bottom line is that if you’re one of these people who loves Christmas so much you can’t say no to a snow sticker, just take care with what you do, when it comes to your car. Nobody needs the gift of a denied insurance claim, or points on your license at Christmas.
