You might not be able to buy a driverless car yet, but you can see them if you live in Milton Keynes, Coventry or Nuneaton. They are on the roads.
That’s right. In those 3 cities just mentioned, companies such as Jaguar Land Rover and Ford are hitting the roads and testing out the technology behind self driving vehicles.
Self Driving Revolution…£28 Billion
This comes at a time when the government are really pushing for UK companies to be at the forefront of the driverless car revolution.
Some have even estimated the industry will be worth £28 billion over the next 17 years, so you can see why British motor companies want to get in on the action.
I think it’s very important that testing is conducted around UK roads over the next few years, because it’s been going on for a while now in countries such as the USA. We have to catch up.
Let’s just hope that companies such as Jaguar Land Rover and Ford have the appropriate car insurance for self driving on the streets of Milton Keynes, Coventry and Nuneaton.
Car Insurance is a Legal Requirement
We don’t want another situation where a major company tries to get away from the scene of a collision caused by their driverless car…without leaving any insurance details.
I don’t think Ford would do that though, because as we all know, they are trusted by many people around the country and are the company most would like to buy a self driving car from.
Let’s wait to see if they can get something together over the next few years, I’m sure this round of testing is getting them valuable data.
Driverless Car Insurance Laws
Anyway, as far as I remember, there has already been talk of new car insurance laws for self driving cars, and it won’t be long until all the details become more clear. Once this happens then I’m sure we won’t get anymore confusion if there is a collision involving a driverless car.
So what kind of testing is being done on UK roads, right now as we speak? I’ve heard that both urban and motorway settings are on the agenda, so that vehicle manufacturers can understand more about how the technology responds to different environments.
Eventually they want to complete a full self driving journey right into the centre of London, which is something that is expected to happen next year. Once it does, then I think we are going to be closer to being able to buy cars that come with self driving technology, and that is when things will really start to get interesting.
There is even some testing of small vehicles in Milton Keynes called “pods,” which if successful, will be used to ferry passengers around busy roads at 15mph. Perfect for London I would say.
