When Sue Whyte started looking for the cheapest car insurance she thought it would be simple to get a quote, but it didn’t work out like that.
All of the quotes she got were so outrageous that she has made a rather unusual decision, but one that might become more common as car insurance gets way too expensive for some people.
What was the decision you might be wondering? She decided to rent a car instead of own a car. That’s right. It appears that when Sue got out her calculator the numbers just didn’t add up when she worked out the costs of owning a car.
This is when the idea came to her, why not just give up on constantly looking for the cheapest car insurance and hire a car when needed.
It certainly is an unusual decision, but when you consider her car insurance quote was in the thousands and the fact she didn’t even use her car every day, then going down this route might not be such a bad idea.
This is actually something we are seeing more of, with many occasional drivers realising they may get a cheaper deal elsewhere rather than getting traditional car insurance.
For example, just this month we saw a new company launch what they are calling pay-as-you-go car insurance, where you can insure your car on an hourly basis. If this becomes popular then I wouldn’t be surprised if Sue would find it cheaper to do this, but for now she is renting cars.
Apparently she only rents cars such as a VW Polo, which can typically be got for under £10 a day, or around £50 a week with some rental companies.
The downside of course is that she doesn’t own any of the cars, which means there is no resale value, but if she has done her sums and worked it this to be the cheapest option then who can argue against it? Sue also mentioned that renting a car is really easy to do, often booking it at 3pm and then going to collect it at 4pm.
So should everybody start renting instead of owning a car? I don’t think so, because for most people it would cost them more.
Getting the cheapest car insurance isn’t always that difficult even if you have been quoted really expensive prices in the past that went into thousands of pounds.
The best way to get started is to compare car insurance, but with a site that does all the work for you.
Maybe Sue only contacted a few insurance companies? I don’t know, but what I do know is that by filling in a simple form that only takes you 3 minutes you can get hundreds of quotes, many of them will possibly be the cheapest car insurance you can find anywhere on the internet.
