While Google and Tesla are already quite far ahead in the self-driving car race, it now appears that Apple are ready to get into the industry.
They could make quite an impact as well, because we all know just how big a company they are, not to mention the fact they often have ideas that are out of the box.
If anything, having Apple involved in the self-driving revolution can only make the reality of seeing these vehicles on our roads a step closer in my opinion.
Apple recently wrote to the US transport regulators and said, “we are excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation. There are significant societal benefits of automated vehicles.”
Many experts in the field are not surprised though, as there have long been rumours about Apple entering the self-driving car market. It’s just a matter of time according to most people in the know.
For example, they have registered domains such as Apple.car and Apple.auto. If anything, they will certainly have no trouble handling the tech side of self driving cars as they are well known for being right on the edge of innovation, as well making products that look very appealing.
So far, the self-driving cars from Google and Tesla haven’t looked that great, if we are all being honest. Perhaps Apple will produce something that will really get people excited? We shall have to wait and find out.
Even car giant Ford are trying to get on the act. They recently announced plans to have their own brand of self-driving cars on the road by 2021, so let’s wait and see what happens there.
That’s only 5 years away so they need to get moving, but it’s more than possible they could be the first to market and sell millions of self-driving cars overnight.
Self-driving cars are obviously the future. It’s not a matter of if, more a question of when. With that being said, there are many implications that such technology could have on the industry that many experts are still considering.
What about car insurance for self-driving cars you might be wondering…will you still need to have it? My guess is yes you will, especially at first because there are going to be mishaps, such as when the Google self-driving car crashed into a bus.
However, once the technology becomes established, I imagine car insurance quotes will get a lot cheaper, which is great for UK consumers.
This is still a long way off, and it could be 10 years before we even get to see the first few self-driving cars on our roads. In the meantime I would advise you to use insurance comparison websites to get the best price when looking to renew your car insurance.
