Be aware this winter, says car insurance comparison site

While this autumn’s milder weather fades into a distant memory, one car insurance comparison site has said that British motorists need to be aware of winter weather and the hazards of driving in snowy and icy conditions.

The online car insurance website, which offers discount car insurance quotes to its customers, offered a long list of things to keep in mind if you’re venturing out on the nation’s roads during cold weather, as ice and snow begin to accumulate and temperatures begin to plummet.  A site spokesperson issued the reminder that everyone needs to be more aware during the winter months not only in the way that we drive but in our preparations for journeys both short and long.

There are many things that you should consider when motoring about this winter, such as giving your vehicle a seasonal check up on its fluids, windscreen wipers, tyres, and lights. Make sure you’ve got plenty of de-icer on hand, especially in light of last year when a shortage sent retailers scrambling to keep it in stock with the sudden onset of cold weather.

Motorists also need to keep in mind what kinds of things you should keep within your car in the event of an emergency.  Items such as a snow shovel, tow rope, an extra pair of winter boots, a sleeping bag, warm coat, or blanket, torch, first aid kit, and warning triangle can not just prove good to have in a pinch but could even save lives.

Check road conditions and weather forecasts through the use of websites or local radio stations before setting out.  Keep your mobile phone charged and your fuel tank filled prior to any journey, and don’t discount the idea of taking some food of a flask of hot beverage along for the ride as well.

Most importantly, drive with care and caution.  Avoid sudden breaking, keep a healthy distance between you and the car in front of you, and keep your foot off the accelerator in heavy rain and fog, and don’t brake suddenly in icy or wet conditions.
