Research institute Thatcham has been conducting joint research with Loughborough University in an attempt to reduce pedestrian injury and mortality rates. Through the identification of the most common situations that could result in a road traffic accident in which a pedestrian could be involved, the development of a new Autonomous Emergency Braking system has begun – something that could lead to discount car insurance for motorists in the future.
Incorporating state-of-the-art technologies such as lasers, cameras, and radar devices, the AEB system could theoretically stop a car in time before colliding with a pedestrian and causing them harm. The introduction of AEB systems could significantly reduce traffic incidents, as Thatcham estimates some 64 fatalities and 650 serious injuries could be avoided every year in the UK.
Other possible benefits include aiding in the prevention of 160,000 whiplash injuries and 270,000 crashes annually. Car manufacturers Mercedes, Volvo, Toyota, Subaru, Ford, and BMW are all currently working on implementation of the technology.
Matthew Avery, Thatcham’s research manager, said in a recent interview that these AEB systems could possibly make a very significant impact on both the severity and the number of road traffic accidents on roads in the UK and abroad. He added that the research centre was working in tandem with several vehicle manufacturers to aid in the development of the systems and was hoping to encourage their inclusion as a new standardised fit in all newly constructed vehicles.
